                     PostScripting With PageMaker
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Set your postscript settings up through PageMaker's Printer Styles feature.  Using a fixed, pre configured Printer Style will insure consistency between submissions and page to page within a submission.  It will also save you a huge amount of steps in the postscripting process.

Before postscripting pages, check the colors of your palette in PageMaker to look for PMS & RGB "spot" colors.  Unless a spot color is desired, convert all colors to CMYK color space.

Also, before postscripting, check your Links Manager to identify missing graphics or as shown here, JPEG & RGB files.  Please refer to the customer submission guidelines for information on supported graphics formats.  JPEG & RGB are not supported.

In addition to that, scroll through your document and look for bleed and trim margin problems.  Check your document set-up to see that your trim size is consistent to the proposal and quotes specified to The Printing House, Ltd.

In PageMaker, go File > Printer Styles > Define... The following dialog box appears.  First click "new" to create a fresh profile.

Next, set a name for the profile that represents it's basic settings.  Comp, for composite color, Fat means all fonts and graphics embedded at full resolution. By adding a space to the front of the name here, this setting will stay at the top of the list.

After we create a new profile, the name pops up and we can then click "edit" to set the settings for this new Printer Style.

Print Features, Leave this all set to printer's default and don't change anything.

Now, Go back to the "options" button & double check these critical settings.  The Options box is the most critical part that affects font mgmt.

Must be set to embed BOTH postscript AND truetype as shown!

Also click on the "Save as"

Here we can pre configure all your postscripts to be automatically routed to your Distiller Hot Folder.

Now double check those font options again and hit OK to save this set-up.

Now, we're ready to make some test files.   First, be sure Distiller is quit, if you leave it running while you make postscripts, Distiller will rob you of horsepower. Normally, I will launch it AFTER I'm done postscripting and it will automatically begin making PDF's of those postscripts we made.

Now, that we're all set up, our printing sequence goes like this.

Quit Distiller,
Open PM 6.5 layout,
Check Page Size,
Check Bleeds & Trim Margins,
Check for Spot Colors,
Check Links Mgr. For Missing and Unsupported Formats,

- NOW LET'S PRINT -

At Bottom, Click On Pages To Be Printed
(as you go along, this step will help you keep
track of what page you are on),

File > Printer Styles > TPH Postscript Comp Fat,

Specify Page to be printed in the "Ranges Field",

Click Options,

Specify the PostScript name here.  Postscript File names should be named as follows.  By following this specific naming convention, your pages are less likely to have a problem in imposing and production.  Supplying then to spec also insures a "unique" filename that is easily identifiable by production personnel.  Your files are less likely to be mistaken for someone else's or vice/versa.

Remember, there are thousands of pages on our system supporting hundreds of publications.  Good file naming is important in controlling quality and accuracy as well as server organization.

The prefix is to be a four digit representation of the
actual page number of the postscript file.  page 1 = 0001,
page 98 = 0098, page 198 = 0198, etc.

0001

The Page Number/Prefix is to be followed by an underscore
which separates the page number/Prefix from your
Vol/Issue/Filename.

0001_

Your Volume/Issue/Filename should be ONLY Alphabetical &
Numerical values.  Upper and lower case are supported.
There should be no spaces, dashes, slashes or other
non-AlphaNumeric characters.  Other than that, the
Vol/Issue/Filename is all yours to create whatever best
makes sense.  Of course every postscript file must have
a .ps suffix at the end.

The path to the Distiller Folder is already set up in
the Printer Style that we created.

Click OK, Then A postscript Test file will be printed into
the Distiller IN folder.

After 8 test files have been printed, one at a time. Launch Distiller.  Print your proofs from the PDF, not the source files.  This way your proof and my plates are coming from the exact same PDF file.

Use a printer utility to remove all installed fonts from your laser printer proofer.  As long as you have fonts installed at your proofer rip, you will not know if those fonts are missing or not from the PDF.

Read all .log files that come out in your Distiller OUT folder with the PDFs, these .log files will also indicate fonts that are missing from your PDF files.

Please install settings and provide a set of test files in advance of a submission.  This will verify that everything is working and set correctly as well as provide some time for us to assist you if we have a problem with the files.
